GMANE provides an alternative service for most mailing lists. c.f. bug 424647
Did you add your ISP's nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf?
/etc/resolv.conf should look something like:
nameserver 10.1.0.1
nameserver 10.1.2.2
Use the same nameserver IP addresses you used when you setup networking
for the install.
