GMANE provides an alternative service for most mailing lists. c.f. bug 424647
IIRC those displays use 67hz for the refresh rate. I don't think you
can get anything more than 640x480 out of them either :( If the
vmode/cmode combo works I would stick with it, as I don't think you
will get anything better with using the other method.
