I'm sure r3 is enough. When you say "emerge -u package", you're saying, |

"Upgrade this package *and* anything it depends on that has a newer |

version available." This will upgrade all dependencies, if they have |
12 |
upgrades in portage, even if they don't *need* to be upgraded. The |
13 |
normal "emerge package" will upgrade if it has a newer version, and |
14 |
dependencies will only be upgraded if the package *requires* a higher |
15 |
version of one of them. |
