I haven't been able to catch it yet and I might never
again. The screen where "mox" is output flashes by so
fast that my eye has to be exactly where the word
appears in order to be able to see it. On changing OF
settings to the factory default, the typeface was much
reduced from what it was and I fear I'll not be able to
see "mox" anymore even if it does appear.

I'll try looking for it on my other iMac; it's an
identical bondi which is running YDL and wvdial. No
problems on that box, so if "mox" shows up there, then
it's probably not contributing to the issue affecting
my Gentoo iMac.

Thanks very much for the URL on setting up ppp by hand.
I'll proceed in that direction now.

BTW, I'm not partial to kppp (running fluxbox); I tried
it because 1) wvdial is masked in the latest ebuilds 2)
wvdial wouldn't work previously 3) most of the modem
config instructions for iMacs I've seen at various
sites focus on kppp.
