After much Google'ing, I found what I was looking for:
video=controlfb:vmode:17:cmode:16
And I set X to use the fbdev. This works for me. Now, I wonder if my old Apple
Color Plus 14" Display (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112529)
can do anything more than 640x480...
