I remember Gerk (and others on #gentoo-ppc) reporting disk IO errors |

while building, at least a similar I/O errors and lockups, did this |

result in a kernel panic? This was encounterd with both XFS and ext3 |

and was thought to be a kernel issue. You might try the stage3 or build |

an iso with a kernel sans the gentoo patches. |
