I had a similar problem building kde on my wallstreet (the kernel panic)
and it was directly related to ext3.  I think there is some problems
when you max out your memory (maybe it can\'t reserve enough to write or
somethig similar).  I reproduced it twice but was unable to get any
useful information as it locked my machine hard as a rock, even after it
dropped to xmon :(
