Mark:

As a matter of fact: Yes. Repeatedly. Have you?!

The docs, while packed chock full o' useful administrivia, are repleat
with omissions and do NOT answer _most_ of my questions:

1. The difference between xf86config and Xeasyconfig
2. emerge'ing xfree86 AND xeasyconf
3. A clear distinction between the stage tarballs and live-CD's
4. What to do when the resolver libraries aren't installed automatically
5. How long it should take (in hours) to emerge xfree86 & kdebase
6. Why kdebase won't emerge when one of its' prerequisites - kdeaddons -
is masked by the global configuration.
7. Why <opt>+<fn>+<f#> may not work on a PB and what to do about it

The list goes on...

One might be inclined to draw the conclusion that...

A. I don't know anything, or
B. Gentoo is far from easy-to-install and well-documented.

I've got plenty of experience with Linux/Solaris and I've read plenty of
incomplete documentation and am inclined to respond that 'B' is the more
apropriate answer. I'm sure that as Gentoo matures and its' growth slows
to allow the documentation to catch-up, installation will become smoother
but for the moment the documentation is neither intuitive nor completely
in-sync with the distibution.

I really AM commited to helping Gentoo become more admin-friendly by
providing a throrough examination of the documentation from a new-users'
eyes and I look forward to being able to brag that "I've been using Gentoo
since way back when..." So, in the mean time I'll continue breaking
things, making note of my experience, asking questions, and sharing my
experience whenever possible.
