As a matter of fact: Yes. Repeatedly. Have you?! |
11 |
|
12 |
The docs, while packed chock full o' useful administrivia, are repleat |
13 |
with omissions and do NOT answer _most_ of my questions: |
14 |
|
15 |
1. The difference between xf86config and Xeasyconfig |
16 |
2. emerge'ing xfree86 AND xeasyconf |
17 |
3. A clear distinction between the stage tarballs and live-CD's |
18 |
4. What to do when the resolver libraries aren't installed automatically |
19 |
5. How long it should take (in hours) to emerge xfree86 & kdebase |
20 |
6. Why kdebase won't emerge when one of its' prerequisites - kdeaddons - |
21 |
is masked by the global configuration. |
22 |
7. Why <opt>+<fn>+<f#> may not work on a PB and what to do about it |
23 |
|
24 |
The list goes on... |
25 |
|
26 |
One might be inclined to draw the conclusion that... |
27 |
|
28 |
A. I don't know anything, or |
29 |
B. Gentoo is far from easy-to-install and well-documented. |
30 |
|
31 |
I've got plenty of experience with Linux/Solaris and I've read plenty of |
32 |
incomplete documentation and am inclined to respond that 'B' is the more |
33 |
apropriate answer. I'm sure that as Gentoo matures and its' growth slows |
34 |
to allow the documentation to catch-up, installation will become smoother |
35 |
but for the moment the documentation is neither intuitive nor completely |
36 |
in-sync with the distibution. |
37 |
|
38 |
I really AM commited to helping Gentoo become more admin-friendly by |
39 |
providing a throrough examination of the documentation from a new-users' |
40 |
eyes and I look forward to being able to brag that "I've been using Gentoo |
41 |
since way back when..." So, in the mean time I'll continue breaking |
42 |
things, making note of my experience, asking questions, and sharing my |
43 |
experience whenever possible. |
