[gentoo-ppc-user] crash - installing from 1.4_rc8

Have a clamshell iBook which had previously been running only gentoo, 366Mhz
384M - Firewire...Had install OS X, and just though I would give gentoo a
fresh go again.  Using the Gnome-Live CD from the rc_7 tree, booted set up
with reiserfs partitions and mounted ok, except for complaint about memory
on "mkdir", but re-entered and took it the second time, incidentally, took a
look at free and I still had 100+ meg of physical ram unused and 0 swap;
anyway...using stage3-g3-rc_8 tarball, I started extracting and the box goes
dead, I have repeated this 3 times so far the last I downloaded the tarball
again from another mirror site?  I was logged into VT 1 and 2, working from
2, hangs while extracting

./usr/share/zoneinfo/America/St_Johns

and in VT 1 the shell dies with the following error:

the mon> is some type of prompt (you can type at it but things like ^c, ^d,
exit, quit do nothing)

does anyone know what this is?
any help would be appreciated.
