Thanks, Milter but that post doesn't *really* address the problem. The post's 
author, porodzila, even says...

  it turned out that i compiled the kernel wrong, but don't ask me what i did 
  exactly (or did not do)....

I'd like to know *what* I'm missing so that I can avoid making the same 
mistake next time.  ;)
