[gentoo-ppc-user] gnome install fails, fblevel no worky, fitful sleep

Hello all,

I'm running gentoo1.2/gcc2.95 on a 300mhz original ibook. The first
install I did a couple months back was a total breeze emerge-wise, on
large packages like kde, X, gnome, but these days I have to coddle and
tweak many emerges...I don't know whether that's indicative of issues
here or not, but there ya go...

Emerge gnome is not co-operating for now, libgnomeprint borks the
process with

../libgnomeprint/.libs/libgnomeprint-2.so: undefined reference to
`deflate'

and to `deflateInit_'
and `deflateEnd'

Also, fblevel doesn't work for me here...no matter what value I enter,
it comes back with -1.

Internal card is Rage Mobility L AGP 2x (rev64)
Xwindows is fully functional otherwise, all kernel parameters and apps
have been entered/installed from the ppc install faq re: powerbooks,
pbbuttons works fine on sound and all else, just no fblevel action. 

Andbutalso
Sleep inducement doesn't shut down the lcd display, some gibberish hits
the screen and the 'book sleeps, but the lcd stays on...seems related to
the fblevel thing but I'm baffled! Driver incompat?

Any ideas?
