Why does configuring a modem to work in Gentoo appear |
2 |
to be such an issue among so many users whatever the |
3 |
platform? |
4 |
|
5 |
I have Gentoo installed and running very nicely on a |
6 |
bondi iMac, except for the modem, which has stumped me |
7 |
for months. Can anyone please offer up instructions for |
8 |
configuring the iMac internal modem? I have not been |
9 |
able to get it to work with either wvdial or kppp. |
10 |
Various testing shows the modem is recognized on ttyS0, |
11 |
but my attempts to dial fail due to the device being |
12 |
"busy". The only clue I have for that is a line which |
13 |
flashes on startup that says "mox" is using the modem |
14 |
port. What is mox? This shows up before any info that |
15 |
can be re-read with dmesg after startup completes and |
16 |
it appears on the very first screen after yaboot |
17 |
proceeds to execute instructions to load the kernel. |
18 |

Thank you *very* much to all who can lend me a hand |
20 |
with this. If others are experiencing the same |
21 |
difficulty, I'll gladly write up a mini-howto for the |
22 |
Tips 'n Tricks forum with the help contributed in |
23 |
response to this call for help. What with Mac hardware |
24 |
being so standardized, it should be worthwhile to have |
25 |
a howto about this topic. |
