Is this from console or from inside xfree?  If its insdie xfree make
sure you have added something like Option \"XkbRules\" \"xfree\" to the
keyboard section of yoru XF86Config file.  If the problem still happens
in console i would double check your kernel options to make sure it is
correct for your machine, etc.
