For your message below. I tried this, and I got much farther, but still
end up with a freeze. I get all the way to the log-in prompt, but then
when I try to type in "root" as the password, my computer locks up.
I've used your two kernel arguments; I've also added the
initrd-size=11000 argument. I've also tried making the ramdisk size
larger (40000). What would be creating this problem -- any idea?

Hi,
i'm also knew to gentoo, but i use a G3/233/320Mo/80Go and here is how i
boot from the liveCD :

in the BootX control panel :
i select the kernel vmlinux
i select in 'options' the ramdisk initrd.img.gz
i do not use 'No Video Drivers' (but it may work, i've never tried...)
ramdisk size : 24000
kernel arguments : 'root=/dev/ram init=/linuxrc'

it works fine on my mac but i remember struggling with these f@!#?
kernel arguments :-) (same problem as you the boot process stopped).
i hope it will help and good luck
