No offense but I feel like you're wasting your time, and that would
result in wasting more time of others as well.

We're talking about tiny files which are usually installed by one- or
two-liner. And any solution that has been brought so far has either
severe issues or is simply overcomplex.

Seriously, you're talking about replacing 'dofoo ${FILESDIR}/bar' with
two pages of text. This whole thread is taking much more effort than
the actual issue, please just stop at this point.
