Hi, |
2 |
|
3 |
Discourse [1] is what all cool kids these days use. LLVM has switched |
4 |
to it some time ago, Python is doing so now after "successful |
5 |
experiment". Unlike of the ancient stuff Gentoo is using right now, |
6 |
it's maintained and has thriving and helpful community. How about we |
7 |
start our own experiment on using it? |
8 |
|
9 |
To cite one concise praise of it from Python ml: |
10 |
|
11 |
> For authors of PEPs and discussion topics, Discourse provides better |
12 |
> authoring experience, allowing for typo fixes and small edits. |
13 |
> For moderators, Discourse also provides the toolings to make their |
14 |
> jobs easier, which is definitely lacking in mailing list. |
15 |
> For the readers, we get the choice of receiving emails via mailing |
16 |
> list mode, or via rss, or by actually going to the site. [2] |
17 |
|
18 |
While I'm not a big fan of these newfangled things, the last argument is |
19 |
quite appealing to me. I mean, I suppose the choice of different |
20 |
interfaces would increase the participation in discussions and reduce |
21 |
the split between Forums and mailing lists. |
22 |
|
23 |
And after all, our Forums are running on a release from Feb 2008 (sic!). |
24 |
Even with all the patching, I'm pretty sure the only reason this swiss |
25 |
cheese hasn't destroyed the underlying server yet is that nobody cares |
26 |
enough to exploit it. Apparently, Discourse has some importer from |
27 |
phpBB3, so we'd probably have to do phpBB2 → phpBB3 conversion first. |
28 |
|
29 |
Yes, I'm talking about replacing Forums, not mailing lists. |
