Yes, as of the 2004.0 livecds (which are based upon catalyst |
2 |
and genkernel 3.0.1), you will be able to copy the kernel and |
3 |
initrd directly from the livecd into your boot partition to |
4 |
boot your systems, I'm still working on being able to grab the |
5 |
/lib/modules/* to fill the system as well. In the near future |
6 |
we'll be building gentoo packages .tbz2's that you can just |
7 |
emerge gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.1-athlonxp.tbz2 and it will |
8 |
install the appropriate packages and kernel. |
9 |
|
10 |
The main problem with genkernel right now is the people who |
11 |
created the livecds have not committed their kernel configs |
12 |
for building your own kernel, if we could get those people |
13 |
to do that, you wouldn't be having those problems. |
14 |
|
15 |
The current livecds have very specific initrds that are only |
16 |
meant for cdbooting, this new initrd in genkernel 3.0.1 is |
17 |
100% multi-purpose, for recovery, normal systems, and cd-based |
18 |
systems. |

I have been installing gentoo on as many platforms as I can get my hands on |
27 |
here at work (about 12 at the moment) in an effort to determine if we can |
28 |
use it in a production environment. They range from brand new to older |
29 |
Pentium III's. The single highest failure mode, believe it or not, is the |
30 |
failure of genkernel to compile a bootable kernel. I find that the CD |
31 |
kernel works in EVERY case, but often I have to recompile the kernel |
32 |
manually to get it to work. Would it be possible to provide a way of simply |
33 |
transferring the CD kernel to get a packaged distribution up and running |
34 |
quickly and then do the tailoring later instead of the frustration of trying |
35 |
to genkernel only to have it fail? Just a suggestion. |
