6 x86 config directory, and make some small changes, like
7 copying over the proper kernel config, and making sure they
8 use the right command in the config.sh to build the kernel.

27 nope. Actually, it has to do more with other arches that care how
28 large the initrd is. For x86 it really doesn't do much more than
29 save some space and memory. But sparc's initrd can't be more than
30 1.5MB compressed if they have a max 3.5MB kernel, so that's the
31 main reason for the attempt at size shrinkage.
