I now have fairly good catalyst docs online at
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/catalyst/

Catalyst is our super-distro-builder tool.

These docs explain how to build stage1, stage2 and stage3 tarballs. I
will add info on GRP, tinderbox and livecd building as I have time I
expect to have basic livecd support for x86 (with not much additional
work to support non-x86 arches) done in maybe 3 or so days (optimistic
estimate.) The bulk of the tricky work is already
complete.
