This is now done.

Anybody wanting to clone the entire repo, go right ahead:
http://git-exp.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=exp/gentoo-x86.git;a=summary

I've set it restricted to only myself at the committer for the moment,
I'm exploring alternative packing solutions briefly.

It you want to try repacking yourself, you'll need a box with at least
6GiB of RAM free, not just installed. Git's repack on aggressive
settings needs ~4GiB for itself, and you want to keep the existing packs
in RAM, which accounts for another 1-2GiB.

Upstream did also point out git-bundle, which looks promising for
helping anybody with bad connections to get their initial tree.

I'll be installing the git development tip on that box as soon as
Linus's memory reduction patches are merged.
