Remarkably, git 1.7.9 was tagged yesterday. From the release notes:
* "git commit" learned "-S" to GPG-sign the commit; this can be shown
with the "--show-signature" option to "git log".
Which effectively means, the biggest obstacle is out of the way.
Now, what does that mean for the merge strategy?
