[gentoo-security] Why this update?

I was looking at the configuration files under /etc that I needed to update.
One file I need to update is /etc/group. My system uses shadow passwords, so I 
think it is right that I have entries like this.

root:x:0:root

(yes, x appears on /etc/passwd as well).

The update that I see however is to blank that x in the password file.

root::0:root

Yes, I understand that it is meaningful, since usually you don't give a group 
password but I would only like to be sure that it is the right thing to do.
