many thanks for all answers (and Venkat for the hint ALWAYS backup with 
aespipe :-).
After emerging 2.11z-r9 it worked again.
Of course, you have to recompile. Otherwise you'll see
# /sbin/modprobe cryptoloop
/lib/modules/2.4.22-gss/kernel/crypto/drivers/cryptoloop.o: /lib/modules/2.4.22-gss/kernel/crypto/drivers/cryptoloop.o: 
unresolved symbol find_transform_by_name
etc...
