Have you checked /var/log/cups/error_log? There could be somethin in pointing to the problem. If not, try setting "LogLevel" to debug in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and reproduce the error.

My cupsd server version is net-print/cups-1.1.23-r7 on Ultra Sparc 5. And there are two real printers and a one virtual PDF printer connected.
