More like old-fangled. Under the new Linux Filesystem Standard (LFS)
agreed upon by a number of distro's (gentoo among them I believe) it
is recommended that *all* service related data be placed under /srv.
The specifics of how data gets organized is up to the admin. Myself
for example, I place all data under /srv/<service> so I have folders
/srv/www, /srv/ftp, /srv/nfs, /srv/samba, etc. In order to keep apps
that like /var/www I've just symlinked /var/www to /srv/www.
