There are actually some very good reasons to do software RAID. As |

pointed out by others, if you are not CPU bound then it is just as fast |

as hardware RAID. Additionally, it removes reliance on a single |

hardware vendor. With hardware RAID if your RAID card dies you need to |

replace it with the same card, with software raid the hardware is |

irrelevant. The disks can be moved to a different box with completely |

different hardware. |

If you are going to do RAID5, though, I would seriously consider |

hardware RAID. With RAID0, 1, 10, and 01, software raid can do quite well. |
