Could you change /etc/conf.d/hwclock to do local time?

OK. There must be something you can do. Dig around in catalyst to see 
what it's doing.

It doesn't forcibly disable it, but you end up trying to copy overly 
large amounts of data into memory once you've got a full desktop 
environment.
