Subject: Gentoo Clustering CD Progress Report W++
Date: Mon, 07 Jul 2008 11:15:19 -0400
Last week was crazy, essentially went from "something" to livedvd +
nfsroot (midterm huh ;P ):

livedvd:
- added my ebuilds (+ some clustering apps just to make sure they
wouldn't bomb on me at integration time)
- started fiddling with fsscripts so the user would know where to start
once booted:
** forcing text mode + modified motd, though I am not too happy with
this approach
- I have to hack around some limitations imposed by catalyst, if I
specify generic-livecd I drop too many features needed for a
functional/installable solution
** I was changing profiles just to be able to specify a custom
motd...will work around that.

nfsroot:
Went from nothing (well...apart from 3yo personal scripts and old
notes) to booting nfsroot!
- I am using my current server configuration to perform tests (with
VMware as the test node), this speeds up the dev cycle quite a bit
- using baselayout2 (openrc) which did make my live easier but I still
have to figure some of it out (such as

General:

- I need to devise the correct way to integrate the nfsroot files into
the livedvd. Uncompressed, the files take ++500MB, compressed, about
145MB (!).
- Is this going to be a full-fledged livedvd solution with config
retention between boots?...the gentoo releases don't have that support
yet but I could hack something up to use ie: a USB key on bootup to
fetch/save configs.

There is a lot more to it but let's leave that to the GIT's commit logs ;)
