Maybe eix can be optimized. All that it really needs to do is parse
the metadata/cache/ directory and you can sync that directory alone
if all that you want to do is search. You can create a tool to do
that without any changes to our existing infrastructure, and it will
probably be approximately as fast as the "30 second ubuntu sync"
that you mentioned in bug 262824.
