I've never tried using my Blade 100 as a workstation, but it has
worked fine for the past 12 months as a headless Gentoo server. I get
decent (though certainly not stellar) performance with Apache, MySQL,
Sendmail with milter-spamc and clamav-milter, and Dovecot.

Other options, if you want to avoid Solaris, are Debian and OpenBSD,
both of which I've run (headless only) on my Blade in the past.

Misc:

1. I've had reasonable luck using a USB CD writer;
2. a standard Intel EEPro 100 PCI card works fine as second NIC;
3. wish I could find some use for the SmartCard reader;
4. the internal clock is wonky, making ntp struggle;
5. haven't tried the IEEE 1394 controller at all;
6. good luck getting decent entropy on a headless sparc;
7. the sungem module that ships with the 2.4.x kernels is limited to
100 Mbps, though the card is supposedly capable of 1000 Mbps.

Gary's right about the noise. It's the loudest box I own, though in my
case I find that the hard drive is the culprit, not the case fan.
