I like U2 SMP. 2x300 are prety reasonably priced; 2x400 have better
performance, but they tend to be overpriced, in my opinion.
For browsing, gimp, and vim work they are fine. I don't know about
openoffice, because I have never been able to build it.
Pure CPU performance: For the mozilla browser, a c++ application with
an aggressively parallel build, I expect the build to take from 4 -- 6
hours, depending on CPU speed and other activities. I haven't actually
timed it, though, so that guess might be off. I am pretty sure I built
it yesterday in 5.5 hours on a U60(2x300MHz) --- performance of U2 is
about the same at a much lower price.
But don't just blindly follow my lead. If you are lucky, you'll get
several different opinions here, and you can pick & choose.
This note is being written on a U2-SMP configured thus:
2x400MHz cpu, 1MB memory, 2x18gb 10000rpm disks, Creator graphics (ffb2+)
6x4x16 CDRW
uname -a gives this.
