With kernel 2.4.x, xorg.conf should have something like:
==============
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "MouseSystems"
Option "Device" "/dev/sunmouse"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "false"
EndSection
==============
With kernel 2.6.x, this:
=============
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "false"
EndSection
==============
At least, those're what I'm using on my systems.
Beyond that, I don't know. What does Xorg.0.log say about your mouse?
And what does "jumps all over the place" mean? And what does your
xorg.conf (Or XFree...) say about your mouse?
Regards,
