Hi all |
2 |
|
3 |
In preparation of the trademark / logo ownership transition I've drafted a |
4 |
proposal on the use of the Gentoo name and logo outside Gentoo. I hope that |
5 |
this proposal is in line with everybody's feelings. |
6 |
|
7 |
""" |
8 |
Disclaimer: This is a rough draft. It is a default setting that allows most |
9 |
users to understand what can and cannot be tolerated. Exceptions |
10 |
can be made on a case-by-case basis. Guidelines for exceptions |
11 |
can be proposed. |
12 |
|
13 |
The name "Gentoo" is not allowed within domain names. |
14 |
|
15 |
The name "Gentoo" is not allowed within project/product names if they are |
16 |
not official Gentoo projects/products. |
17 |
|
18 |
Disclaimer: This cannot be enforced when the subject of the project/product |
19 |
is no operating system or is not referring to the Gentoo project. |
20 |
|
21 |
The Gentoo logo can be used when: |
22 |
- it is accompanying Gentoo-related content while the logo itself is not |
23 |
part of the main layout of the medium itself |
24 |
- it is not the primary (largest) logo on the same side of the medium. A |
25 |
possible guideline is 1/3rd of the size of the largest image |
26 |
- it is displayed on non-commercial promotional material about the |
27 |
Gentoo project which contains unmodified content from the Gentoo project |
28 |
|
29 |
An exception can be made on a case-by-case basis for commercial purposes. |
30 |
""" |
31 |
|
32 |
I'll take some examples: |
33 |
|
34 |
- The documentation website http://www.gentoo-wiki.com is using "Gentoo" in |
35 |
it's domain name and the website is clearly about (or referring to) |
36 |
Gentoo. It is therefore violating this draft but they can come to an |
37 |
agreement with the Gentoo Foundation easily (for instance _clearly_ |
38 |
mentioning that the project is no official one) |
39 |
- LiveCDs that are given away for promotional use can contain the Gentoo |
40 |
name and logo as long as they are plain copies/burns of official LiveCDs |
41 |
- T-Shirts with the Gentoo logo on it as a main logo cannot be sold (but |
42 |
they can be given away at no costs), yet t-shirts that have a larger |
43 |
logo on the same side of the t-shirt can be sold |
44 |
- Websites that give news about Gentoo, or a WiKi explaining Gentoo, can |
45 |
freely use our logo when it accompanies the Gentoo content |
46 |
|
47 |
I believe such settings allow for the best containment of Gentoo's name and |
48 |
logo usage without loosing the invaluable PR that can be achieved when the |
49 |
name and logo is frequently used. |
50 |
|
51 |
Thoughts? |
