With the recent discussions on -dev about GLEP 19 and the proposed stable |
4 |
portage tree, a suggestion was made to charge for this service. At first, |
5 |
I wasn't too keen about it, but as I thought about it, I realized two |
6 |
things: |
7 |
|
8 |
1) We have no stable source of revenue at this point. |
9 |
2) A stable portage tree would be a great way of establishing a stable |
10 |
revenue stream. |
11 |
|
12 |
I think we could charge a nominal amount for this service -- say |
13 |
$5/month/machine or $50/month for unlimited machines -- and use that to |
14 |
fund our other endeavors (trade show expenses, the $500 minimum deposit for |
15 |
our bank account, etc.) |
16 |
|
17 |
Folks would not be obligated to use this service -- they could continue to |
18 |
track the mainline tree. |
19 |
|
20 |
I'm pretty sure OSU would be willing to work with us to set up and manage |
21 |
the billing services. We have the infrastructure to offer this as well. |
22 |
Also, we're not in violatoin of our social contract in any way as we're |
23 |
still offering the same information for free -- this way would just be |
24 |
packaged differently. |
25 |
|
26 |
Thoughts? |
