I have two machines desktop (x86_64) and laptop (i686), both with HDA Intel.
On the laptop all is well.
On the desktop playback is fine, but recording is not, e.g., when using
skype my son cannot hear me, but I can hear him.

On the (working) laptop alsa mixer shows two (stereo) volumes,
capture and digital. The nonworking desktop has only digital

Skype on the laptop works when capture is live and digital muted.
Skype cannot "hear me" when capture is muted and digital live.

OK so I need to get capture on the desktop. I use gnome and clicked on
system --> preference --> sound
Under default mixer tracks there is only master pcm and digital to
choose from.
The laptop has these three plus capture and capture mux.

Any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
allan
