[gentoo-accessibility] ocr programs

I just did an emerge search on ocr, and found two... OCRAD, and GOCR. Anyone have any experience with either of these? If I could find a decent linux ocr program and then a way to convert the resulting file to a format my windows machine will read decently, I'd be real happy.
And if so, any ideas about supported scanners? I'm in the market for a new scanner, so getting this info ahead of time would probably save me a lot of trouble down the line.
