Subject: [gentoo-amd64] cant boot off sata disk

I recently got a new motherboard, 500G SATA drive & new memory, due my
hard drive dying & the old motherboard not reconising the new drive.

I booted off the 2008.0 livecd & installed the system just fine.
I can mount all the partitions, chroot, & emerge stuff without much trouble.

fdisk shows /dev/sda1 is bootable & I built I new kernel & added it to
grub.conf (which I've done
many times before).

When I boot without the CD, I don't think control is going to grub.
There are no messages, it just sits there after 'boot from CD' comes
up.

I cant currently emerge crypt-utils as it needs a kernel parameter
set, which is why I want to boot off the new kernel (the livecd would
do if X would actually start, but there is a link error on it).

A whole bunch of things depend on crypt-utils, notably KDE.

I suspect the problem has to be in the BIOS settings yet it looks alright.
I'm wondering if grub can be told to put out more early information.
