I have a similar problem on my x86 laptop with composite, nvidia, and
mplayer. I found that when I switch from mplayer from full screen back
to windowed with xcompmgr running, it basically freezes X session. If I
kill xcompmgr before running mplayer, it works fine (without
transparency).
