[gentoo-amd64] booted 32-bit chroot but cannot emerge

Hi,
   Where is ARCH supposed to be set?

   To try out the Parallels software I set my AMD64 up to boot into
the 32-bit chroot that I have on the machine. It boots fine but when I
try to run emerge I get a message something like

ARCH not set!
Are you possibly missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?

and then some more stuff.

   I'm back in 64-bit for now so that I can send this message. It
seems that the link is there. Any other ideas about what else I can
look for? Where is ARCH supposed to be set?
