I use -combine here, too, but be aware that there are a number of 
packages that still break with it.  I use 
/etc/portage/env/cat-egory/pkg files to remove it for such packages, 
using this line:

CFLAGS="${CFLAGS/ -combine/}"

I'll post my CFLAGS again (last time was probably over a year ago now) in 
another post.
