How fast is your memory? I'm using single-channel PC3200 (DDR400).
It's odd to note that of my three drives, sda seems to consistently
provide the worst performance of my three drives (all are the same
make/model). I haven't identified why this is yet, but it really
doesn't impact the system's performance noticably, so I haven't been
too concerned with it.

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads:   2780 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1389.52 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  104 MB in  3.07 seconds =  33.88 MB/sec

/dev/sdb:
 Timing cached reads:   2772 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1384.13 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  166 MB in  3.02 seconds =  54.92 MB/sec

/dev/sdc:
 Timing cached reads:   2588 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1293.55 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  164 MB in  3.03 seconds =  54.15 MB/sec
