16 no idea about layman (don't use it myself) but I've seen the above a
17 couple of times, and it's always been due to garbage in my portage
18 overlay.

20 Try unsetting PORTDIR_OVERLAY in make.conf and doing the sync - if it's
21 clean then you know to look in your overlays for the culprit. If so then
22 put back chunks of the overlay(s) until you find the problem.
