in my experience, there is a variable in livecd-stage2_template.spec
(which can be found in /usr/share/doc/catalyst-1.1.10.10/examples/ if
you have set +doc for catalyst use flag) called
boot/kernel/gentoo/config: that allow you to do so.
I have copied my .config file to /etc/catalyst and set the variable to
boot/kernel/gentoo/config: /etc/catalyst/.config
Normally (if i do remember) that file is directly copied to
/var/tmp/catalyst/tmp/default/livecd-stage1-i686-2005.jdos/usr/src/linux
(in your case) to compile the kernel.
You need to provide a .config file so that it is pasted into the
catalyst environment thats the main idea.
And yes, the .config file is first created when you run i.e. make
menuconfig in /usr/src/linux.

hope this helps good luck
