Hello,
Regarding the issue of an X freeze I only wish to add my two bits which are
only relevant to those who have NVIDIA hardware (and driver).

I have an NVIDIA graphics card and usually keep up-to-date via emerge. I was
at media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.5336-r2 when the freeze(s) occurred. It was not
just an X freeze - it was a kernel panic.

I experienced these at random intervals but was able to google my way out of
it.
The current emergeable nvidia version apparently contains defective kernel
functions which have been obsoleted (pci_find_subsys for one). Some of these
functions are used in interrupt context and will crash.

So look at /var/log/messages for anything nvidia-related like:
Sep 22 19:48:14 byrd [<c0207ba8>] pci_find_slot+0x28/0x50
Sep 22 19:48:14 byrd [<f0dbefc2>] os_pci_init_handle+0x39/0x68 [nvidia]
......
Sep 22 19:48:14 byrd Badness in pci_find_subsys at drivers/pci/search.c:167
Sep 22 19:48:14 byrd [<c0207d68>] pci_find_subsys+0xe8/0xf0

I went to the nvidia website and downloaded the then latest stuff
(NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run) and installed it the old way.
I have not had the problem after that.

Hope it helps.

Best regards,

Erik
