Hello, |
5 |
Regarding the issue of an X freeze I only wish to add my two bits which are |
6 |
only relevant to those who have NVIDIA hardware (and driver). |
7 |
|
8 |
I have an NVIDIA graphics card and usually keep up-to-date via emerge. I was |
9 |
at media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.5336-r2 when the freeze(s) occurred. It was not |
10 |
just an X freeze - it was a kernel panic. |
11 |
|
12 |
I experienced these at random intervals but was able to google my way out of |
13 |
it. |
14 |
The current emergeable nvidia version apparently contains defective kernel |
15 |
functions which have been obsoleted (pci_find_subsys for one). Some of these |
16 |
functions are used in interrupt context and will crash. |
17 |
|
18 |
So look at /var/log/messages for anything nvidia-related like: |
19 |
Sep 22 19:48:14 byrd [<c0207ba8>] pci_find_slot+0x28/0x50 |
20 |
Sep 22 19:48:14 byrd [<f0dbefc2>] os_pci_init_handle+0x39/0x68 [nvidia] |
21 |
...... |
22 |
Sep 22 19:48:14 byrd Badness in pci_find_subsys at drivers/pci/search.c:167 |
23 |
Sep 22 19:48:14 byrd [<c0207d68>] pci_find_subsys+0xe8/0xf0 |
24 |
|
25 |
I went to the nvidia website and downloaded the then latest stuff |
26 |
(NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run) and installed it the old way. |
27 |
I have not had the problem after that. |
28 |
|
29 |
Hope it helps. |
30 |
|
31 |
Best regards, |
32 |
|
33 |
Erik |
