Hi! |
2 |
|
3 |
I'm the admin of rsync5.de.gentoo.org. |
4 |
|
5 |
For quite a while now (over a year, maybe even two or more), the |
6 |
gentoo-x86-portage rsync module has been deemed deprecated. Yet |
7 |
still the manual for setting up an rsync server says that it |
8 |
should be configured. |
9 |
|
10 |
I see about 1700 connections on my server per day. In the last |
11 |
few months I have seen these counts for syncs against |
12 |
gentoo-x86-portage: |
13 |
|
14 |
22 2006/01 |
15 |
17 2006/02 |
16 |
4 2006/03 |
17 |
11 2006/04 |
18 |
2 2006/05 |
19 |
|
20 |
This tells me two things: First, there are still people out there |
21 |
who use it. They should be more explicitly discouraged from doing |
22 |
so. |
23 |
|
24 |
Second, while there are some people who use the module, there are |
25 |
so few that after all this time we should finally be able to get |
26 |
rid of the module. It hasn't served any useful purpose for months |
27 |
if not years. |
28 |
|
29 |
The only reason it has lingered so long is probably because it |
30 |
uses nearly no extra resources. |
31 |
|
32 |
What do you think? |
33 |
|
34 |
Regards, |
35 |
Tobias |
