Ok, we're now officially admitting that Paludis exists (really this |
2 |
time), and is fit for an initial public release. Paludis is a library |
3 |
providing ebuild-related utilities together with a simple command line |
4 |
client. It is not a Portage rewrite, nor is it a Portage replacement, |
5 |
although it could be considered to be on its way to becoming a Portage |
6 |
alternative. |
7 |
|
8 |
Many of the features in Portage are not present in Paludis. Some of |
9 |
these features will appear in Paludis at a later date; some will not. |
10 |
Paludis is not Portage compatible, and should not be used on the same |
11 |
ROOT as Portage. Paludis will rape your dog. |
12 |
|
13 |
The homepage is at [1], and includes a HOWTO explaining how to set up |
14 |
a chroot built with Paludis. Note the bug tracker and mailing list; |
15 |
discussion of this lot on Gentoo lists is highly discouraged since it's |
16 |
not supported. The source can be found at [2] for those too lazy to use |
17 |
Subversion. |
18 |
|
19 |
Bug reports go via the bug tracker, preferably only after having |
20 |
discussed them in #paludis. So far most bugs we've found have been user |
21 |
or ebuild screwups. Feature requests and requests for doing stuff that |
22 |
Portage does are not welcome unless they come with a decent patch or |
23 |
are actually easy to implement rather than just looking like it; we are |
24 |
at the "make it more or less sanely usable" phase, not the "make it nice |
25 |
and shiny for end users" phase. Ricers will be terminated. |
26 |
|
27 |
For a list of differences between Portage and Paludis, see [3]. The |
28 |
list is not complete, nor does it attempt to be, but provides some |
29 |
points of interest that are intentionally different. Some of these are |
30 |
missing Portage features, while some are fundamental differences in |
31 |
design. All are subject to change without warning or reason. |
32 |
|
33 |
Paludis has been used to install at least one bootable system, complete |
34 |
with Xorg and Fluxbox. There was a full moon at the time. It cannot |
35 |
install Gnome because Gnome's deps are broken. It cannot install KDE |
36 |
because no-one can be bothered sitting and watching Qt compile. |
