Greetings,

Could someone shed some light as to why php's xml support is dependant on
libwww? PHP comes with a bundled expat library for xml parsing so no extra
packages are needed to enable it. However, the ebuilds for php and mod_php
have this:

xml? ( >=net-libs/libwww-5.3.2 >=app-text/sablotron-0.96 )

and later:

use libwww && myconf="${myconf} --with-xml" || myconf="${myconf}
--disable-xml"

This seems very counter-intuitive. In fact, libwww doesn't even seem to be
needed. Also making sablotron required if xml USE flag is set is not
entirely correct either. It is possible to have xml extension built in
without sablotron -- sounds like there needs to be another USE flag for
that?

Aside from this, what is the reason for allowing to turn xml off in the CLI
version? The xml module is required for the pear management system, and
since it doesn't require any external packages, there's no harm in not
disabling (it is enabled by default in php's build system).
