9 I, too, was reluctant to try udev, until I tried it and figured that it is
10 good. Most, but a few drivers work with it, and it is only a matter of creating
11 entries for the few devices that are not supported.

13 Plus, if you want to automate the process, you can put the devices in the
14 tarball and "chattr +i" it, so it doesn't get overwritten. Only problem is, I
15 use reisefs.

17 I, too, think that the tarball hack is ugly and makes /dev cluttered. However,
18 http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57110 solves this problem. I now use the
19 tarball, and it doesn't clutter my /dev. Take a look at the bug, and if you
20 like it, post a comment on the bug. I guess this will increase its chances of
21 getting some attention. As I thought, I am not the only who had a low opinion
22 of the tarball hack, so more people are likely to benefit from that fix.
