You have to create a backup directory somewhere. Set its location in
"/etc/dispatch-conf.conf". (Default is /etc/config-archive, but I
personally use /var/backup/config). While you are in this conf file, you
should also decide whether you want the backup to be a collection of
files or a RCS repository. And you can choose the type of
automatic merges you want (I use automatic CVS header merge and
unmodified files auto-upgade). 

And then you're ready to go, "alias etc-update=dispatch-conf" :)
