4 agreed, for a source-based distribution its unnecessary. for a binary based
5 distribution, some applications take numeric values at compile-time (qmail
6 comes to mind). no reason they couldn't be patched, though...

8 if there's a table of allocated uids/gids for applications which absolutely
9 need static ones, then there's no need to have this unnecessary crap
10 cluttering up the default /etc/passwd, and Gentoo developers can push out
11 creation of these into the package config part of an ebuild.
